Best Shot Program
An ideal vaccine program should consider many factors. Included in these are genetics, nutrition, parasites,
and stress (including weaning), at the time of vaccination and afterward. The health of the animal is always a
concern. Almost never vaccinate an animal that is sick or running a fever. A digital thermometer should be a
frequently used tool. (Wal-Mart rectal thermometer coated with petroleum jelly or another lubricate before
inserting) Normal temperature of puppies and kittens is 101.5 after about a week of age. Prior to that animals
do not effectively maintain body temperature so environmental control (usually warming) is essential.
That said, an excellent program would be:
PUPPIES
- Deworm 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 7 weeks with Pyrantel, Panomate Pancur, etc
- Vaccinate 3 weeks, 5 weeks with Bordetella and coccidastat (albon, flagel or alternative)
- Between 5 and 6 weeks titer parvo & DA2mp (Neopar is suggested)
- 7 weeks and 3 days (5 days before shipping) high titer parvo, (Neopar), Da2mp, or a 5way high titer is ok.
- 7 weeks and 3 days coccidiastat and giardiastat for 5 days (albon, flagel, or alternative)
KITTENS
- Deworm 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 7 weeks
- Vaccinate 4 weeks. 8 weeks Coccidiastat (albon, flagel, or alternative)
- 3 weeks, 4 weeks Bortella
- 6 weeks 3 way (FVRCP)
- 9 weeks 3 way (FVRCP)
- Dip and Bathe 6 weeks, 9 weeks with 2% Chlorexidine solution to prevent or treat ringworm.
For a transporter to ship your animals you must vaccinate with a high titer parvo vaccination 5 days
prior to shipping, use a coccidiastat (albon, flagel or alternative) for at least the last 3 days prior
to ship and put on the copy of the health certificate that is out side your envelope the following:
- the product used
- manufacturer
- lot number
- date given
